Fernald retired in 2019 after 17 years of service to this Aroostook County community. He now resides in St George, Maine. The awards luncheon was held at Patrick\u2019s Restaurant at the Bingham Airport (ME08).\u00a0 About 35 people (colleagues, family, and pilots) attended the celebratory luncheon including two special surprise guests from the mid-west; son, David Jr and David Sr&#8217;s sister Mary.<br \/>The GGCA is an important recognition, and all too often we don\u2019t hear about what goes on day to day, or what is done \u201cabove and beyond\u201d to run an airport especially in the far northern reaches of the state. Fernald was instrumental in keeping the Frenchville Airport safe and sustainable; from procuring a grant for an important precision runway approach to his extraordinary customer service that kept pilots coming back. His dedication to his job, his customers and community never wavered. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>Nominated by his peers in the aviation community the award is an opportunity to recognize one of our own who exemplifies the spirit of the man the award is name after\u2014Gadabout \u2018Roscoe Vernon\u2019 Gaddis. He was the originator and star of the <em>\u201cThe \u201cFlying Fisherman\u201d<\/em>, a popular weekly radio show turned television series in 1962 which was nominated for an Emmy in 1968. Tim and his late wife Kathy ran Central Maine Flying Service in Old Town before they founded KT Aviation in the mid-80\u2019s with Jimmy Strang, now of Katahdin Air Services. In 1988 Tim and Kathy acquired the seaplane base on Pushaw Pond. While still working their day jobs (commercial airline pilots) they built the business into a formidable facility offering floatplane instructing, tailwheel training, and charter services.<br \/>Tim plays a key role in the Maine aviation landscape and exemplifies the spirit of the man this award is named for\u2026 Gadabout \u2018Roscoe Vernon\u2019 Gaddis\u201d the star of the \u201cThe \u201cFlying Fisherman\u201d a popular weekly radio and then television series in the 50\u2019 and 60\u2019s. FOBA was formed in response to a citizen referendum to close the Biddeford Airport. The group was overwhelmingly successful in defeating this 2008 vote. Due to the efforts of FOBA\u00a0along with\u00a0EAA 1210 chapter\u00a0which is based at the airport\u00a0the group\u00a0raised awareness of the importance of the airport by going door to door and organizing an open house. The Biddeford Open House is held every other year, and the 2013 event is\u00a0in August. Special thanks was given to Jerry Bernier founding member and past chairman of FOBA for his tireless efforts in getting the group off the ground and for helping \u201csave\u201d this important part of the Biddeford community.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">2011<\/span>\u00a0Gadabout Gaddis Cup Award Winner &#8212;\u00a0Phil Simpson of Wiscasset. <\/strong>Simpson, a former co-pilot for the state, was the assistant director of aviation for Maine from 1972 until his retirement in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gadabout Gaddis Cup Award is presented bi-annually in the spirit of the\u00a0&#8220;Flying Fisherman&#8221;\u00a0to a Maine individual or organization who contributes significantly to the well-being of Maine&#8217;s aviation community.
